Laconia Savings Bank Sponsors Mount Washington Observatory Distance Learning Initiative

Mount Washington, NH—Laconia Savings Bank has made a $50,000 gift to the nonprofit Mount Washington Observatory to help support its new distance learning programs. Utilizing videoconferencing technology, the programs connect schools and learning centers all over the world to Mount Washington Observatory’s famous summit weather station for live, interactive programs about the science of climate and weather.

“Supporting educational opportunities in the state of New Hampshire has always been a priority for Laconia Savings Bank,” says Laconia Savings Bank’s President & CEO Mark Primeau. “We are proud to partner with an institution that shares this level of passion for education.”

A primary focus of the Observatory’s distance learning initiative is to educate students about the fundamentals of climate.

“Few organizations are stepping back from the climate change discussion to make sure that people, especially children, have the necessary knowledge to understand all that is being discussed in the media about climate change,” says Mount Washington Observatory Executive Director Scot Henley. “We are working to fill that need.”

Leveraging Mount Washington’s notoriety and the Observatory’s expertise in meteorology, the programs allow students across New Hampshire and beyond to learn from real scientists living and working in the field. Distance learning is the newest addition to the Observatory’s outreach offerings, which include traveling programs, two unique museums, day and overnight trips to the summit, field workshops, museum programs, a library and various online resources.

“Educating the public about the science of climate and weather has been a part of the Observatory’s mission since our founding in 1932,” notes Henley. “We are honored that Laconia Savings Bank, another iconic New Hampshire institution, has chosen to help support our educational endeavors.”
